²³ The descendants of Joseph had first sent up spies against Bethel. (Its name had previously been Luz.) ²⁴ The spies saw a man coming out of the city and said to him, “If you show us an entranceway into the city, we will be merciful to you.” ²⁵ He showed them an entranceway into the city, and they put the city to the sword, but they let the man and his entire family go free.
